Position Description
Position Title: Controller
Department: Finance
Status: Full time, Exempt
Reports To: Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Pay Range: 50,000 – 70,000 annually
Job Summary:
DuPage Children’s Museum (DCM) nurtures joyful learning and discovery so that all children can thrive through extraordinary learning experiences. The Controller supports this by overseeing the financial operations of DCM, including the management of accounting, reporting, budgeting, and compliance functions ensuring all reporting complies with GAAP. This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively across departments to ensure the financial health and growth of the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
- Financial Management:
- Oversee all accounting operations including Billing, A/R, A/P, GL, Fixed Assets, Inventory Accounting, and Revenue Recognition.
- Coordinate and direct the preparation of the budget and financial forecasts and report variances.
- Prepare and publish timely monthly financial statements.
- Coordinate the preparation of regulatory reporting.
- Research technical accounting issues for compliance.
- Perform bank reconciliations for all banking accounts and endowment.
- Maintain the bank ACH vendors and payments.
- Accurately assign or verify correct assignment of general ledger numbers.
- Prepare and manage cash flow analysis and cash availability
- Support the work of DCM employees by drafting financial procedures and providing information.
- Maintain and provide information for insurance and workers compensation including the annual insurance audits.
- Manage the allocation of payroll to the department codes and posting to the accounting system and act as a backup for the payroll process.
· Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
- Maintain fixed assets and depreciation schedules.
- On a periodic basis, work with the Chief of Dollars and Sense and the Technology Manager to assess, upgrade and/or replace existing accounting systems and other technology systems for museum management.
- Supervise the Accounting Assistant.
- Supervise the Finance and Administrative Assistant
- Internal Controls:
- Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
- Ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting.
- Manage and comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
- Audit and Compliance:
- Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP principles.
- Liaise with external auditors.
- Prepare and file all museum tax returns promptly.
- Process all fund dispersals to tax and other accounts accurately and promptly.
- Team Leadership:
- Manage and mentor direct reports.
- Provide training and guidance to staff to improve financial literacy and understanding within the organization.
- Assess the performance of team members and provide regular feedback.
- Financial Strategy:
- Provide strategic recommendations to the CFO and members of the executive management team.
- Assist the CFO in financial planning and analysis activities.
- Participate in key decisions as a member of the executive management team.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or CMA preferred.
- Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive accounting experience, including as a Controller.
- Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and procedures.
- Experience with creating financial statements, general ledger functions, and the month-end/year-end close process.
- Strong proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent analytical skills with a focus on accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
