Position: Jacksonville Area Museum Manager/Coordinator of MacMurray Archives & Collection

Overview: This position is shared between two different organizations which share space in the Jacksonville Area Museum for displays of historical items and the housing of items not on display but of historical significance to each organization. Each organization is governed by its own board of directors, who may set specific goals and/or activities determined to be of importance to their organization. The position reports to both boards and interacts with board members of each as appropriate. The ability to direct and work with volunteers is important, including some recruitment activities. As a shared position, it will be incumbent on the individual to balance work and be able to provide documentation of time dedicated to each organization as requested.

 

Salary and work hours: The base salary is $24,000 per year and the candidate will be expected to work 25 hours per week. Limited paid time off is available.

 

Responsibilities:

              Jacksonville Area Museum

The position is responsible for:

  • Appropriately staffing the museum during its regular and special hours of operation.
  • Ensuring each visitor to the museum is provided a prompt, friendly greeting, given basic information about the museum, encouraged to view the video and invited to donate to the museum.
  • Overseeing the proper cataloging, care, and display of the museum’s artifacts and collections.
  • Training and scheduling volunteers including interns to assist with museum projects and staffing as needed.
  • Coordinating with the board committees to:
    • Update museum exhibits at least semi-annually.
    • Establish and operate within an annual budget
    • Grow the museum membership base.
    • Organize, promote and present member and public events at the museum at least four times a year.
    • Update social media and other forms of communication to keep the public aware of the museum and its mission.
  • Performing other duties in a timely manner as assigned by the museum board of directors.

 

              MacMurray Foundation

Working with the Foundation’s Board of Directors and designated volunteer(s), the position is responsible for:

  • Overseeing and coordinating the MacMurray College Archives & Collection
    • This includes records and documents, artifacts and items related to the history of MacMurray College
    • Digitization of historical records (Presidential papers, faculty and other items deemed important)
  • Maintaining, cataloging and safe-keeping of the Archives & Collection
  • Annually, identifying and developing list of equipment, hardware, software or display needs with budgetary proposal to Board of Directors
  • Using social media and e-newsletters to share information about the Archives & Collection and history of MacMurray College
  • Informing key Board designated volunteer and Board of Directors of MFAA activities
  • Identifying areas of need and use of volunteers
    • Recruiting and guiding volunteers in areas of interest and/or need
  • Annually or as requested, developing and recommending goals and objectives for the position to the Foundation’s Board of Directors

 

Qualifications: A Bachelor’s Degree required, with interest in the areas of history, social sciences, education or related areas preferred. An internship as part of the degree in the field of choice is preferred and/or previous work experience.

 

Goals: On an annual basis each organization may set specific goals reflecting their board of director’s areas of emphasis and to give direction to the position. Such goals may be shared with each organization as needed. It is recommended that the individual in this position have input and be able to add personal/professional goals they deem appropriate and important on an annual basis.

 

Evaluation: Each organization may conduct their own annual (or more frequent) evaluation utilizing a tool of their choice. As much as possible this should be coordinated between both organizations’ board chair or their designee. Any salary increase is based on the performance evaluation.
