Kohl Children's Museum of Greater Chicago is a $5m nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide experiences and memories to build a foundation for a lifetime of learning. Reporting to and partnering with the President & CEO, the Vice President of Finance (VPF) will set Kohl Children’s Museum’s (KCM) financial policy and direction while also being an active participant in, and driver of, the organization’s overall strategy. The VPF will lead all financial administration, business planning, and budgeting. As a member of the senior leadership team, the VPF will work closely with a motivated and engaged finance and governance committee of the Board of Directors.
The VPF will lead the Museum’s finance and information technology (IT) staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial and Operational Management
· Oversee budgeting, and the implementation of budgets, to monitor progress and present operational metrics both internally and externally
· Ensure that finance staff maintain financial record systems in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, and monitor the use of all funds
· Oversee the preparation and approval of all financial reporting materials and metrics; prepare and communicate monthly and annual financial statements to management, the Board, and staff as appropriate
· Manage cash flow and forecasting; direct all financial, project-based, and departmental accounting
· Coordinate all audit activities
· Review all formal finance and IT-related procedures, processes, and administration, recommending improvements to the systems in place and managing the systems
Strategy
· Partner with the president on all operational and strategic issues as they arise; provide strategic recommendations to the president based on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense analysis
· Participate in the ongoing strategic planning process as an integral member of the senior management team
· Oversee long-term budgetary planning and cost management in alignment with KCM’s strategic plan
· Engage the Vice President of Development to align financial management with short- and long-term financial planning and projections
· Engage the Board Finance Committee around issues, trends, and changes in the operating model and operational delivery
Team Management
· Develop and manage direct staff, to include managers in finance and IT
· Engage other members of the senior management team— to facilitate cross-department collaboration that ensures that all financial, IT, and HR solutions positively support KCM’s evolving strategy, operational delivery, and data collection needs
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING:
· A minimum of a BS and a CPA; MBA is a plus
· At least five years’ experience as CFO or equivalent, preferably in a nonprofit organization with a budget of at least $5 - $10 million
· Experience in a senior financial-management role, partnering with executive staff, resulting in the development and implementation of creative financial management strategies
· Significant experience in or knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including sophisticated fund and grant accounting, compliance, and reporting
· Experience working with information technology staff to manage finance and accounting software packages; experience working with Blackbaud NXT/Financial Edge required
· Excellent organizational skills with ability to manage deadlines and prioritize workload to meet needs
· Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work well with all levels of staff
· Excellent written and oral communication skills
· Demonstrated leadership ability, team management, and interpersonal skills
· Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills, plus excellent organization skills
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
· Valid driver’s license, own vehicle, and good driving record
· Flexibility with work schedule, as necessary, to support weekend scheduling and/or evening activities
