Duties

Major duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Creates and manages museum records that prove ownership, describe materials in the collection, document loans, locate objects, and ensures that museum collections are physically and intellectually available for collection management, interpretation, exhibition, and research.
  • Provides daily and cyclical cleaning and monitoring of artifacts, examining and monitoring environmental conditions. Implements a preventive conservation program based on an understanding of good collections management techniques, the museum environment, and basic materials science.
  • Uses computers and digital cameras and digital photography and collection management software to create high-quality web-ready catalog records.
  • Organizes museum records, identifies and labels artifacts, and supports the accession review team in evaluating objects for the collection
  • Serves as a team member on curatorial projects (such as conducting 100% baseline inventories of park museum collections; the elimination of cataloging backlogs; organization of photograph and archival collections; creation of missing documentation for accession, loan, and deaccession files; photo documentation of collections; and the reorganization of storage areas).


Fort Larned National Historic Site is located six miles west of Larned, Kansas. Government housing is not available; however, houses and apartments are available to rent or to own in the nearby area. Public transportation is not available. Shopping, schools and a hospital are all available in town. This is a rural area, 2 ½ hours from Wichita. Elevation is 2,036 feet and the average rainfall is 23 inches. Summer temperatures sometimes exceed 100 degrees and winter temperatures of 20 degrees or lower are not uncommon. Pullman National Historical Park is located in Chicago, IL. This park, established in 2015, tells the story of 19th and 20th century industrial society and labor history. There is an emphasis on the 1894 Pullman Strike and Boycott and the 1937 efforts unionization efforts of the African American Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters with the company. The site also preserves the innovative 1890 urban planning that continues to influence community development today. The NPS owns and manages a historic Administration building that serves as the Visitor Center and park offices. The park works with park partners and residents to maintain and share the historic community. World class cultural, recreational, medical, and educational opportunities are available in the region. Public transportation by both bus and train is available to the park. No government housing is available, but there is a diverse range of housing opportunity available within the commuting area.
