Position Title: Arts & Maker Tinkering Camp Intern
Status:  Part-Time, Not Benefits Eligible, Non-Exempt, Approximately 29.5 hours per week; Dates of Employment: May 28 – August 6, 2025

Job Summary:  

The vision of DuPage Children’s Museum is that all children reach their full unique learning potential through equitable access to hands-on play and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) based experiences. The Arts & Maker Tinkering Camp Intern (AMTCI) is a vital part of DCM’s Tinkering Summer Camp. The AMTCI will facilitate campers’ learning and experimentation during daily and special programming by encouraging and modeling the importance of open-ended and multiple outcome experiences. All facilitation will be in person. Such activities include: helping children design and build their own inventions, teaching safe tool usage, and supporting campers’ creative and artistic expression. The AMTCI will work collaboratively with other staff to ensure a positive learning environment and maintain a safe, educationally sound, hospitable, and challenging environment for the camp.

This position is partially funded by the Illinois Arts Council Agency (IACA) and must be filled by either a high school student or a student who has just graduated from high school (not yet attended college).  Applicants who have already participated in an IACA position within the same calendar year are not eligible.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Prepare materials and set up infrastructure for exhibits, programs, and events.
  • Facilitate and initiate interactions with children to deepen their learning experiences during the day’s program; instruction and facilitation will be in person (following current safety guidelines).
  • Lead participant safety and program readiness; this includes setup and cleanup of materials, providing safety information to participants and maintaining a safe environment.
  • Assist in all program/camp cleaning procedures.
  • Assist in post camp survey analysis and documentation.
  • Encourage communication and enhance team support/spirit among the DCM staff.
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of DCM mission, philosophy, policies, and procedures as related to camp activities.
  • Provide excellent customer service to participants and parents. Defer to Arts and Maker Specialist as needed. 
  • Participate in all staff training.
  • Practice safe tool usage (tool safety training will be provided).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Relationships:

Reports to the Tinkering Camp Coordinator

Education and Experience:

  • Experience working with young children and/or interest in working with children a must.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent customer service verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with tools a plus.
  • Must exhibit problem solving, critical thinking, and troubleshooting skills. 
  • Must work well in a values oriented collaborative team environment.
  • Fluency in Spanish, and/or other languages aside from English, a plus.

The following abilities are required for the position: (a) Able to work outdoors, exposed to sunlight/heat; (b) Display dexterity necessary to maintain arts and maker materials; (c) Manipulate camp components and facility operating/maintenance equipment; (d) Stand, kneel  and move among program materials/set upsfor extended periods of time; (e) Climb up and down stairs or use an elevator daily; (f) Bend, kneel, climb and reach; (g) Lift up to 50 pounds; (h) Tolerate noise and dust in the environment and handle disinfectant and cleaning materials.

Other:

  • Must adhere to appropriate dress code.
  • Must be available and able to work for the duration of the internship program.
  • Must be available for training:  May 28–30 (9am – 3pm).
