Curatorial Assistant - IT (Part-Time)

Duties: Under the close supervision of the Assistant Zoo Director/Collections Curator, the Curatorial Assistant - IT (Part-Time) is responsible for the following:

  • Preparing and distributing of media tools regarding the Zoo’s conservation and research efforts. 
  • Aiding in the preparation and distribution of media tools regarding the Zoo’s education and other efforts.
  • Aiding in developing and updating the social media schedule that reinforces the significance and relevancy of Peoria Zoo programs. 
  • Performing tasks necessary to meet schedule.
  • Aiding in developing content and updating Zoo’s website.
  • Researching and recommending additional electronic forms of marketing and aiding in securing impactful social media placements.
  • Performing special IT/data projects as assigned by the Collections Curator.
  • Aiding in the preparation of grant proposals.
  • Following all safety procedures that pertain to the duties performed.  Supporting all aspects of the Park District’s safety program.
  • Performing other duties as assigned

 

Essential Functions: The work requires periodic physical exertion in handling supplies, equipment, and materials typically found within a zoological environment.  Prolonged standing, bending, stooping, and the ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds will be required on an as-needed basis.  Must have the ability to manipulate keyboard, phone, and fax machine.  The indoor work setting is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.  Outdoor work will expose the incumbent to a wide range of weather patterns and environmental surroundings.

Qualifications

Education: A bachelor’s degree in Communications, Environmental Science, or Education is preferred.  Although a degree is preferred, experience in a similar position with similar duties and responsibilities may be substituted for all or part of the education preference.

Experience: A minimum of two years of experience working with computers, especially with social media and website design/update.

Knowledge and Ability:

  • Must be able to demonstrate proficient communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work with staff who occupy positions at various levels throughout the organization.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills to reach a wide variety of audiences.  Formats include, but are not limited to, social media, website, grant proposals, and reports.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of basic zoology or biology is helpful. 
  • Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot familiar computer and network problems.
  • Knowledge of video editing software is helpful.
  • Ability to be professional, respectful, accountable, innovative, to follow safety procedures, and be equitable to both internal and external customers.
